More About the Avocet Corner Bookstore
The store offers a wide variety of items to purchase. Books on subjects from
environmental conservation to rock-hounding and a plethora of field guides on
birds, wildflowers, hummingbirds, butterflies, dragonflies and more, are
available to peak your interest. Reading books from Terry Tempest Williams,
and other authors, that share their stories of birding adventures abound. A
wide selection of children's books are available as well as a resource area
for educators and home schoolers. Gift items range from logo T-shirts and
hats to wind chimes, coffee mugs, notecards and the ever so popular Audubon
singing birds. We also feature specialty items from local artisans. We have
pottery from Susanne Stohr, wildlife photography from John Savage, carved
decoys from Richard Johnson, art prints from Debbie Goodman, hand designed
soaps and lotions from goat's milk from Becky Yeager and bronze sculptures
from Kurt Robinette. Kurt also has his most recent book in the store
featuring the sculpturing techniques of world recognized, Greg Woodard. Greg's
bronze "Velocity", is prominently displayed in the foyer of the James V.
Hansen Wildlife Education Center.
Our newest service to offer our customers is the ability to purchase your
Federal Duck Stamp at our store. Buying a Federal Duck Stamp provides 98
cents out of every dollar directly to purchasing vital habitat for protection
in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Since it's creation in 1934, over
$700 million dollars has been generated for the conservation of more than 5.2
million acres of wetlands and migratory bird habitat.
Come and check us out the next time you are in the area. Be sure to stop in and
pick up a volunteer application if you would like to help out by taking a
shift at either the bookstore or the front information desk! We are always in
need of volunteers! And don't forget to get a bottle of water with our very
own label on it to keep hydrated while out enjoying the birds and refuge!
Remember, we are not just a place, but a destination to be revisited often!
